Mary & Maria

So, the other day I was thinking of things to do as a mom that would make me "cool" but also "good." AND...the craziest thing happened...I thought of Mary Poppins and Maria...2 amazing Julie Andrews roles! So then I thought, she must know it all (Julie Andrews that is)!! Here are the top 10 hings that make her so great as a mom/caregiver:
1. sings songs all the time. for work, play, clean up, eating, taking medicine, romance.
2. highly organized. she carries carpet bags full of every needed item, manages lots of kids.
3. creative/inventive. makes clothes out of curtains, games out of work, songs about singing notes.
4. witty. makes humor out of the darndest things: leading to laughing fits on the ceiling...that "wooden leg named smith", what a kill!
5. brave. flies through the air with umbrellas, attempts being a nun, handles mean men
6. simple. compared to the other women, she maintains her simplicity in style, trend, and manner.
7. well planned. she never allows the children to go a day without doing something new: singing in the hills, jumping into chalk paintings, climbing trees.
8. structured. keeps a schedule and holds it.
9. peaceful. no matter what the hair raising situation: bank fights, missing kids, running from Nazis, she remains calm.
10. compassionate love. her eyes are always on the children with a heart of compassion and love. through their struggles (absent, hard-working fathers) she is the constant. her love for the children is so strong, she does everything that is best for them.

In essence, I truly do admire Mary/Maria for her role...I suppose it is no coincidence she shares the same name as the mother of the world's most precious child, Jesus. In this season I can't help but think, as a mother, how Mary felt bringing her Son into the world. Did she wonder if she would be a good mother? if she would be witty, organized, brave, peaceful, well planned?? Or even more, what if she couldn't sing??? Would she be able to make it as a mother?! I am curious to know....what mother doesn't think of these things? Maybe just those named Mary/Maria.

Hi Lesley
I found your blog via facebook. I happen to admire Mary/Maria in those roles as well. I own those movies, and it gives me some hope to watch them. I hope for those characteristics to some out in me more.
Also her confidence is a big thing. "Practically perfect in every way" I know that in my nature am in no way perfect, but am grateful for my heavenly father who gives me everything I need to be the perfect match for my husband and my children.
